Global Crisis

HUMAN TRAFFICKING = $$$. Slavery is not a thing of the past, An estimated 27 million slaves still exist in the world today. Slavery is not just found in the history books, it is alive and thriving. But WHO are they?

"Every day in many countries of this world, children are bought and sold, transported against their will, and forced into lives of prostitution, slave labor and utter misery." Statement by UN High commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson. Women as well.

The first step towards action is Awareness. Group membership will be the main focus of my project. I will make posters, flyers or pamphlets containing facts and statistics regarding this issue. Possibly, something else for the people who "want to do something."

  1. This sounds like a really great idea. You seem to be passionate about it which is a huge strength for your project. But what is going to draw people into this group? Do you have ideas of what the group can do to help with the issue of slavery? Also, you might want to see if you can find pictures of what these people look like when they have been slaves. Are they treated well and kept well fed, or do they look malnourished? If you have events planned for your group you could have letters to other clubs on campus to help support your cause.

  2. I like this idea alot. Because most people are under the false pretense that slavery had been "abolished", it is a good idea to get the word out. I'm sure you will, but just an idea, i would list specific countries, and even what these children are being put through day by day. Because I'm sure these children are severly abused, and being put through more than we can imagine. But overall a great idea!

  3. I really think your project is a good idea. I really like that your project is about addressing those who are and have been taken into slavery. In your pamphelts, are you going to explain how these people are brought into slavery? Is there any safety precautions people can take to prevent this from happening to them? Is there any known situations or stories that you could use to get your point across even more? You might consider using chalk on the sidewalks to draw support and interest in your group.

  4. I feel like this proposal is very strong. The biggest struggle of joining a group is actually going and participating. Seeing that you are wanting to make flyer and the sort, is a great way to start your involvement process.

I think you should put some of the fact you gave in your proposal. It is shocking to me how many people are still enslaved.

I think you could also do something that has more of an impact. Tape a red index card to half the tables in the lunch area that say something about how you are 1 out of every 10(or whatever the stats are)people that are still enslaved today.

    Good Luck!

  5. Hello. Thanks for the ideas about the recycling/consignment store. I think that your topic/proposal is very interesting. What are your strengths and weaknesses of this proposal? Maybe you could explain a little bit more about different groups/organizations that are against slavery. Or you could do a compare and contrast of both sides of this issue. I can't wait to see what you do for this upcoming assignment 3.

  6. I think you do have to have permission to get things taped to the tables, but I think it's very easy. If they won't let you 'tape' things to the table try asking about making a stand up version!
