Global Crisis Revised

Activism

Obviously, sex is a very broad topic. As our standards and moral change in a society, things become more acceptable. Nowadays, sex sells. . We’ve gotten used to the boob and ass shots on the TV screen. Our tolerance has led to grave problems locally, nationally, and internationally. Sexual predators kidnap, molest, and rape women and children in Evansville just like they do in Japan or Russia. This needed to be brought to our attention.

I had difficulty on how I would approach this assignment. My goal for this project was different than the goal of my organization. Their focus was to raise donations to fund missions against American sex tourists internationally. My focus was to raise awareness on the issues of human trafficking, sex slavery, and sexual predators.

I felt people needed to know how many sex offenders live in Evansville. I felt people needed to know that slavery still exists today through sex. I needed to show people that innocent children are beaten and raped daily by people who could possibly live next door. I just wanted to cause someone to think, to feel something about the situation. I wanted Awareness. I didn’t want money or memberships. Awareness was already too big of a task.

When you look at the number of people who go missing yearly, and only a few make the evening news, something is wrong. Eventually, the next problem to address would be to show how the problem affects our economy, the health risks involved, as well as the attack on human rights. It is not a problem that can be solved overnight, or even within a few years.

I started my awareness campaign by posting and handing out flyers, putting note cards on the lunch tables and making posters. I used information and statistics from each subtopic. Disturbing pictures of Iittle children always seem to pull on the heart strings of most people. Fear for their own personal safety or of a loved one works too. By using people’s fear and emotions, a little bit of information on some of the topics could goes a long way. If I could make a few people curious, they might research the topic themselves. If they felt compelled to make a difference, they could join a group or donate money to my organization.

This class assignment has made a big impact on me. I have actually changed several of my future goals and ambitions. These problems are part of the reason I returned to school. My goal original goal was to become a prosecuting attorney. Now, I would like to create my own organization lobbying for policy changes as well.

Global Crisis

HUMAN TRAFFICKING = $$$. Slavery is not a thing of the past, An estimated 27 million slaves still exist in the world today. Slavery is not just found in the history books, it is alive and thriving. But WHO are they?

"Every day in many countries of this world, children are bought and sold, transported against their will, and forced into lives of prostitution, slave labor and utter misery." Statement by UN High commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson. Women as well.

The first step towards action is Awareness. Group membership will be the main focus of my project. I will make posters, flyers or pamphlets containing facts and statistics regarding this issue. Possibly, something else for the people who "want to do something."

Public Discourse Assignment

For English 201, we are to blog about our participation in public discourse. My understanding of public discourse is writing about my personal life that can influence others. I could be wrong. I have a bit of a fear of writing about my life for others.

Ideas I have to possibly write about....

  • Participating in a local political campaign and the sexual harassment received
  • Testifying against someone to keep him from hurting anyone else
  • Speaking to the parents of a violent child living in my neighborhood
  • Liver disease killing my father and the "attitude or assumptions" that my dad was a drinker (never drank alcohol a day in his life)
  • Stereotype associated with Single Mothers that I have faced and will continue to face

I'm not really sure which one to choose. All are very important to me.

SOMETHING OF INTEREST

After hours of searching through countless blogs, “too many good secrets” was the blog to finally catch my attention. The blog is written by a 24 year old college student living in Berkley, CA. She posts about her day to day life, thoughts, interests, along with random “tidbits.” Her blog seems to be a way of self expression, while being able to relate to others. She is very open and honest. She posts blogs not only about, but to her family and friends. I like how she writes to the reader, instead of just journal writing.
Her audience would obviously contain her family and friends. She writes to them and about them. She also writes to people who share the same interests she has, such as food, cooking, nature, simplicity, and so forth. She keeps the readers interest with photographs, quotes, videos, humor, and my favorite; sarcasm. She is very open about what she is thinking or feeling. For example, “The best thing I can do for myself is to be attentive, to watch carefully what is happening, to feel out the direction, to sense what movement I can.” (Caitlin 1) think this is what keeps the readers interested. Her love for so many things and “simple” lifestyle makes her a very likeable person, even without meeting her.
Her posts’ titles are interesting. She gives us a new spin, a new view of a topic or thought. She has a post: “superbowl sunday.” You would expect it to be about, well, the Super Bowl… only it not. It’s a simple thought and picture of what she probably saw that day. Another one, “curmudgeony” is not about old, archaic anything; but about how she is destined to be a miser by age 30. Her humor and sarcasm keeps me laughing, because I can definitely relate!
I think she is trying to point out the simple, yet enjoyable aspects in every area of life. She is trying to show us not to take a gorgeous sunset for granted, or to stop and tell your family how grateful you are to have them in your life. After reading a few of them, it made me stop and think about the things I tend to over look or take for granted.
I look forward to her future posts. It is interesting to see this clearly into someone else’s thoughts. I have gotten so used to people who are trying to hide their true identity, it is refreshing to see someone who isn’t.

SOCIAL GLOBE

What and where is the public sphere?

The public sphere is an area where people can gather and discuss social problems; a place or forum to gather information, discuss and debate options and ideas.

These places include, but are not limited to....

  • Newspapers
  • TV
  • Newsletters
  • Bulletin Boards
  • Websites
  • Community Events
  • Magazines
  • Theaters
  • Coffee Shops
  • Sidewalks
  • Flyers
  • Public Announcements
  • Posters
  • Pamphlets
  • Window arts
At each location, you can discover different interest and concerns. A coffee house discussion would be organized completely different than a discussion taking place during a community event. Information provided on a poster or flyer does not include all the important information that could be found in pamphlets, magazines, or newspapers.

BRAINWORK

I think. Alot. I question everything.

Just a "Sampling" of the recent overloads within my brain.

Who am I?
Who I am not?
Who do I want to be?
Will my tumor grow back?
Am I setting a good example for my children?
Am I a good mom?
Can I be a better mom?
If I died tomorrow, who would take care of my children?
Was returning to college the right thing to do?
Is paying bills going to become a problem?
Why can't I sleep at night?
Will I fall asleep in class today?
Did I remember to take my medication this morning?
Where is America headed?
Can I really make a difference in someone's life?
Are my goals obtainable
Where do I find inspiration? Motivation?
Am I in need of therapy?
Why do my ex's (all of them) still bother me?
When will life get easier?

I think I need a part time job....
